on a new or completely formatted HDD
Installing
MS Windows Xp on a new HDD
- Plug your HDD and set the BIOS configuration to boot your
pc from CDROM.
- Start your Winddows Xp installation and do the partitioning
step like the shots below.
- Note! These steps are done on a HDD with 15Gb disk space
and we
will create a C drive for Windows Xp installation and a D drive to keep
our data files there.
- When you see the below shot press C.
- Like the shot below insert your desired disk space for
drive C and press Enter.
- With the help of arrow keys go on Unpartitioned space like
below shot and press C, we will create drive D.
- Like the shot below insert your desired disk space for
drive D and press Enter.
- Like the shot below go on C: Partition1 and press Enter to
start the installation.
- In the next step continue your installation with formatting
your
drive C with FAT or NTFS partitioning formats as you wish, and finish
Windows Xp installation steps. Here I've formatted drive C with
NTFS file system.
- After booting your pc with Windows Xp, format your drive
D
Creating
new partitions using GParted
- Do this step using a linux live CD with GParted package
installed. I've used Ubuntu 5.10 Live CD here.
- Set your BIOS to boot up your pc from CDROM,
insert Ubuntu 5.10 Live CD and reboot your pc.
- In this step we will create a / and a swap partition for
our Ubuntu installation and a /home partition to keep our data there.
- Like the shot below start GParted.
- You will see GParted windows like this shot.
- Like shots below create the /home partition with 4Gb disc
space and choose the Filesystem as ext3.

- Like shots below create the swap partition with 1Gb disc
space and choose the Filesystem as linux-swap.

- Like shots below, we will smaller the extended partition to
create a primary / partition.

- Now create / partition like shots below with remaining disc
space.

- Press Apply to apply the changes.

- You can ignore minor warnings if you see here.
- Reboot your pc and go to next step.
